Editorial Standards and Safety Review

CarCodes links manufacturer and US agency sources, separates documented facts from editorial checklists, and keeps uncertain vehicle fitment unknown.

Research method

Records link to original manufacturer, NHTSA, EPA and FTC material. We do not reproduce manuals or infer every vehicle combination from a model family.

Publication gate

Owner-facing high-risk summaries receive a source-link, scope and safety-wording check. Detailed technician decision branches stay in the original research data and are not published as consumer repair procedures. No qualified mechanic signoff, repair success, hands-on test or current VIN decision is claimed without evidence.

How a claim reaches a page

A manufacturer manual or technical communication is linked with its stated make, model, year, engine and document date. A general code description is not copied across every model as a verified fault. We check for conflicting wording, historical revisions and missing production conditions before writing a vehicle-specific conclusion. Where the source only mentions a code, we say that it appears in the document rather than inventing a universal definition.

Owner checks are conservative and non-invasive. Brake, SRS, steering, high-voltage and other safety-critical technician branches remain in the original research data. Owner-facing pages describe observed symptoms, source scope and questions for a qualified shop; they do not teach a consumer repair procedure.

What we will correct

  • A broken or superseded official source link
  • A model-year or engine combination unsupported by the document
  • A warning action that conflicts with the exact owner manual
  • A code description presented as a proven failed part
  • A product claim without current exact fitment and retail identity
