Aftermarket Parts and Your New-Car Warranty

An aftermarket part does not automatically void a new-car warranty. Damage caused by a defective part or improper installation can still affect a related claim.

Keep useful records

Keep receipts and service records. If coverage is denied, ask which damage the maker says was caused by which part or installation.

Read the actual terms

FTC guidance distinguishes a manufacturer's warranty from a separately purchased service contract. Confirm the terms for your vehicle.

The part and the damage are separate questions

FTC guidance says an aftermarket or recycled part does not by itself void an auto warranty. If a defective part or incorrect installation causes damage to a covered component, that related claim may be denied. Keep the part invoice, installer details, service records and the written reason for any denial so the cause can be discussed on evidence rather than a blanket statement.

A separately purchased service contract is different from the manufacturer's warranty and may have its own terms. Read the exact contract before assuming it covers diagnosis or parts. For emissions equipment, also check whether the federal or state emissions warranty applies to the diagnosed component.

A practical purchase sequence

  • Diagnose the system and document the measured failure.
  • Check recall and warranty status before paying for a replacement.
  • Match the current part number, engine, options and emissions configuration.
  • Keep installation and maintenance records for any later warranty discussion.
