Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions recorded around a fault. Capture it before clearing codes, if your scanner and vehicle expose it.
This reference supports the stated topic only. Model, model year, equipment, current rule or individual vehicle conditions may differ; check the original source before acting.

What to save
Record code status, RPM, load, coolant temperature, vehicle speed and fuel data where available. Missing fields are normal; do not invent them.
Why it helps
A cold-start condition, high load or low-speed event can change which diagnostic branch a shop should use. A snapshot does not prove a failed part.
What the snapshot tells a technician
Freeze frame may record engine speed, load, temperature, speed and fuel-control values around an emissions fault. These are context, not a final diagnosis. A cold-start event near freezing can call for a different manufacturer bulletin branch than a warm-engine event. Save the code and snapshot together so the values are not separated from the fault they belong to.
Not every scanner shows all fields, and a vehicle may keep only a limited snapshot. Do not fill missing values from memory. A technician may also need live data or a manufacturer-specific failure record that a basic reader cannot access.
How to preserve it without losing other evidence
- Photograph or export the full screen before pressing any clear button.
- Include units such as °F, mph and percent when shown.
- Record which code the snapshot is associated with if the scanner identifies it.
- Save pending, confirmed and permanent status separately from the snapshot.
