EV Won't Charge: Safe First Checks

An EV charge failure can involve the car, connector, charger or building wiring. A hot outlet, damaged cable or warning to stop charging needs prompt safe action.

Non-invasive checks

Read the exact vehicle and charging equipment messages. If safe, record the charger type, location, time and whether another known-good station behaves differently.

Do not open equipment

Do not touch damaged connectors, orange cables, battery hardware or building wiring. Ask the vehicle maker, charging provider or qualified electrician as appropriate.

Separate the car, station and building supply

Record whether AC charging, DC fast charging or both fail. A failure at one station may involve its connector or network; repeated failures across known-good equipment may point toward the vehicle, but neither pattern is a diagnosis. Read the complete on-screen alert and charging-equipment indicator before resetting anything.

If an outlet, plug or charging handle is hot, discolored, damaged or smells unusual, stop using it. Do not open building wiring, the charging unit, the port or orange high-voltage hardware. A qualified electrician may be appropriate for a suspected building-supply problem, while vehicle alerts belong with the manufacturer or a qualified EV technician.

  • Station type, connector type, location and whether the failure occurs immediately or later.
  • Any change after using another known-good station when safe and practical.
  • Photos of the display only; never handle damaged live equipment for a photo.
