A rough idle is a symptom, not proof of a bad spark plug. A flashing engine light or severe shaking calls for a safe stop.

Record the pattern
Note cold versus warm idle, A/C load, recent fuel or plug work, and whether the check-engine light is steady or flashing.
Read the complete scan
Save stored, pending and permanent codes plus freeze frame. Misfire, lean-mixture and air-control faults need different tests.
Avoid a parts guess
Ask a shop whether fuel, ignition, intake leaks or mechanical condition explains the measured data before replacing coils or sensors.
Sort the pattern before choosing a part
A rough idle only at a cold start can lead to a different diagnostic branch than a rough idle after the engine warms. Note whether the car also hesitates under load, whether the A/C is on and whether a recent repair changed the symptom. A cylinder-specific misfire code reports the cylinder the system detected; it does not establish a coil, plug or injector failure.
If the warning light flashes or the engine shakes severely, stop safely. Repeatedly driving to reproduce a severe misfire can create additional risk. When the car is parked and cool, an owner may record visible disconnected intake ducting, but should not touch moving belts, hot exhaust or high-voltage components.
Questions that narrow the diagnosis
- Were fuel trim and airflow readings compared with the misfire data?
- Do companion codes suggest an intake leak, fuel delivery problem or a sensor circuit issue?
- Does the shop have the cylinder layout and correct procedure for this exact engine?
- After repair, was the same cold or warm operating condition checked again?
