What the records can and cannot show

A submitted complaint describes one reported event. NHTSA may use reports with other evidence to investigate safety issues. A count has no denominator for the number of vehicles on the road and may include different conditions, incomplete details or repeated reports. It cannot show the chance that your vehicle will have a problem.

Read the original record and check whether the reported year, make, model and component actually match your question. A complaint is separate from a safety recall and from a manufacturer service bulletin.

Use a VIN for recall status

When deciding what to do with your own car, use the official NHTSA VIN recall lookup and the current manufacturer instructions. Do not treat a complaint record as a repair procedure or proof that a particular part failed.
